How to Deep Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

How to Deep Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

It’s important to deep clean your makeup brushes regularly with soap and water. Especially those you apply creams or liquids with, such as your Begonia Bella foundation brush or if you use cream eye shadows or blush.

This process removes any dirt, oil, or makeup residue from your brush bristles. What I like to do is wet my hand, add a drop of gentle shampoo to the palm (brush cleaner works too of course), and swirl the brush around to get the shampoo into the bristles. Be careful not to pull on the bristles too hard as this can cause them to break off or shed over time.

Then rinse them under the sink with warm water, being careful in the direction you turn the brush. So, You want the water to run down the bristles, not up! There are some that suggest soaking your brushes or putting them in a cup of soapy water. Please do NOT do this!

The water causes the wood handles to swell and then contract. This will loosen the bristles in time. Soaking in water will also eventually cause the glue to break down. This will reduce the life of your brushes. Again, use the palm of your hand (or a silicone brush cleaner mat) to help work the dirt and cleaner out, gently squeezing the water and grime from the bristles as you go.

Once the water runs clear, lay the brush on its side on top of a towel so that water does not drip down into the ferrule (the metal part that holds the bristles together). Allow overnight to dry your Makeup Brush completely before using it again.
